One of the main goals of the John Denver Memorial Peace Cloth is to
make children aware of the possibility of peace in their world. It is our job as
parents and educators to make these ideas accessible to them, on a level they can
understand and get excited about. To that end, the John Denver Kid's Peace Cloth was
born (see the link below).
When the Cloth comes to your school or to your child's school, the following are
discussion topics that can be very useful for introducing these ideas (see below
to download a detailed curriculum): |
* What does the word "memorial" mean?
* Who was John Denver? click
here to download his bio (PDF format, see below)
* Nature --
* Why is it important to care for the earth? Can lead to discussions about wildlife
conservation, recycling, etc.
* Music -
* Play John Denver's songs for them. One that may speak to children is "Rhymes
and Reasons".
* What is peace? What is the context of peace in the world today?
* Heroes
* What makes someone a hero?
* Who are their heroes and why?
* Make a panel for the Cloth
* Use paints, glitter, fabrics, etc.
* The panel should be a representation of what peace means to them, things that are
important to them, etc.
