"...if peace is our vision,
let us begin..."

-- John Denver, Cherry Lane Music, 1986.

The John Denver Peace Cloth is proud to announce its new association with Peaceful Blue Planet. The members of the PBP board voted unanimously to accept the Cloth as a committee of Peaceful Blue Planet. Both boards will remain autonomous and look forward to many opportunities to work together in the future.

On October 12, 1997, the world lost the talent and vision of John Denver. While most know some of his wonderful, uplifting music, fewer know the full extent of his humanitarian activities that encompassed ending hunger, supporting human rights and creating a healthy, sustainable environment. United in grief and spurred on by their love for this man and his work, a group of admirers and friends created the John Denver Memorial Peace Cloth as a visible expression of his message of peace for the planet. Thousands of people from all walks of life, in countries as varied as Australia and South Africa, contributed colorful patches of material, which has resulted in a three-foot wide tapestry now stretching close to 2,000 feet. The original goal was for the cloth to be part of Millennium Peace Day, a worldwide peace demonstration at the United Nations in New York City on September 19, 2000. And it was. However, that spectacle was only the inauguration ceremony for this magical creation that continues to grow and tours constantly around the world. Here are some recent highlights:

  • The John Denver Memorial Peace Cloth was invited to participate in the dedication of the John Denver memorial at the Austin Nature Center in Austin, TX. Cassandra Delaney-Denver spoke about the event and the Cloth on Fox News; you can view the digital video by clicking here;

  • The Peace Cloth made its first appearance at Children's Day in New York City in June, 2002 and will participate again this year. Members of the Peace Cloth board of directors were interviewed by Channel 9 News; digital video of their appearances coming soon;

  • Quilt World magazine features the Peace Cloth in an article entitled, "One Man's Legacy" by Sandra Miller -- (click here for: Quilt World article page 1; Quilt World article page 2); additionally, the Cloth created panels to honor the memory of all those lost on September 11, 2001 -- photos of these panels may be seen by clicking here;

  • Three panels of the Peace Cloth were draped in the entranceway to the Denver, CO production of "Almost Heaven", a musical journey celebrating the life of John Denver;

  • The Peace Cloth was invited to participate in the Challenger Learning Center, in honor of John Denver's commitment to space and the remembrance of the Challenger astronauts lost in 1986. According to their website, "a visit to a Challenger Learning Center isn't just a field trip – it's a learning experience that engages students, transforming them into scientists, engineers or researchers on a simulated space mission."

  • The entire Peace Cloth circled the perimeter of the village set up for the annual Prayer Vigil for the Earth, on the mall in Washington, DC. This event was created to honor and celebrate the diversity of the world's culture and spirituality. Ongoing;

  • The entire Peace Cloth was on display at The Windstar Foundation in Snowmass, Colorado, during the annual celebration of John Denver's life. Windstar was founded by John Denver and Tom Crum in 1976 to promote the dissemination of ideas geared toward the sustainability of life on earth; ongoing.

Requests for the Peace Cloth are continually being received (see Calendar for upcoming appearances). Projects for 2002 included a school curriculum that speaks to peace, the environment, caring for each other and Mother Earth. It is available on the Education page (or by clicking here to download the PDF file) and can be used by teachers at all grade levels.

If you wish to donate to the Peace Cloth, all that is asked is that it be an expression of your hopes and prayers for peace. Say a prayer for peace as you hold your cloth in your hands. Many have encorporated John Denver's themes into their donations but please do whatever feels right for you. Swatches can be accepted in any size, although nothing wider than 36 inches to keep the Cloth somewhat standard in width.Send cloth donations to:
